1980 is too early for FSF but it was probably either MIT-AI or MIT-MC
which ran ITS. You could create an acct at the "login prompt" (or
their equivalent which as I remember was just ":"), it wasn't obvious
how but cheat sheets abounded. You immediately had to email the
accounts alias and say the right magic (like who is "sponsoring" your
acct, a faculty name was a good answer) or it'd probably disappear in
a few hours.
The machines were certainly connected to the ARPAnet.
